Who Was Buddha?

Teach your children all about the Buddha and his teachings in this exciting new Buddhism Religious Education scheme of work for KS1. Your children will learn all about the key principles of Buddhism as well as the meaning of some Buddhist symbols. This Year 1/Year 2 scheme of work also has a range of practical activities to get children engaged with learning about how Buddhists worship and celebrate on religious days.

This engaging series of R.E. lessons for KS1 comes with lesson plans with a choice of learning activity, differentiated worksheets, colourful slides and a whole range of other teaching resources.

Siddhartha Gautama

This lesson introduces the prince Siddhartha and tells the story of how he became the Buddha. Children will begin to learn about some of the principal teachings of Buddhism as well as retell the story of the Buddha in their own words.

Statues

Children will look closely at different statues of Buddha to identify common features and learn about their meaning. They will also learn about why Buddha statues are an important focal point for Buddhist worship.

Parables

In this lesson, children will learn about parables and their meanings through exploring an ancient Buddhist story from the Jataka.

Be Kind

Children will be introduced to some of the guiding principles taught by the Buddha. They will go on to think about some of the things which Buddhists might do to live their lives according to these principals.

Worship

This lesson begins by asking children to identify features of Buddhist temples around the world. They will go on to learn about shrines and how they serve as a focal point for Buddhist worship and meditation.

Vesak

In this exciting lesson, children will learn all about how Vesak is celebrated by Buddhists around the world. They will go on to recreate Buddhist artefacts or meals that form part of this annual celebration.

This Year 1/2 RE Knowledge Organiser has been created to complement the study of the Buddhism strand within our RE and worldviews resource offer. It is designed to support your children's understanding of key vocabulary and big ideas covered in this scheme of work, while signposting prior learning. Children are also encouraged to reflect on 'Ways of Knowing' about religion and worldviews, and to think deeply about the topic through the 'Thinking Questions' provided.
